Common Reasons for Knee and Hip Revision Surgery

There are many reasons why you may require a revision procedure after knee or hip replacement surgery:

• Your implant wears out over time
• You experience complications after your initial procedure, such as
  • Infection
  • Allergy to the metal implant
  • Reaction to metal ions
  • Premature implant failure
• Fracture of bones around the implant
• Recurring dislocation of the implant

Revision Procedures at CAO

At Colorado Advanced Orthopedics, we offer the following hip and knee revision procedures:

• Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty – This surgery is performed when a prior knee replacement has failed. Possible causes include loosening of the implants, infection, malalignment, instability, and normal wear and tear. During this procedure, part or all of the old knee replacement is removed and replaced again.
• Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty – This surgery is performed after total hip replacement failure, infections, repeated dislocations, loosening, and normal wear and tear. In addition, patients who may have had a metal-on-metal implant used previously may need to have a revision if their implant has been recalled. During this procedure, part or all of the prior hip replacement is removed and replaced again.
